Bringing It All Together

Bringing It All Together

Book Sex Worth Wanting
Chapter 3 of 3

Get in touch with your own knowing

And let that matter more than the script. It’s delicate work… because what feels true is not always yours; sometimes it’s conditioning that has been living in you so long it feels like intuition. Part of becoming free is learning to tell the difference. Part of becoming free is letting go of all the scripts and looking inside for your answers, for your deep inner knowing. Give yourself full permission to be who you are, like what you like, want what you want, and extend that same permission to your partners.

Presence over performance

Great sex isn’t about perfect technique — it’s about presence. When you’re embodied, emotionally connected, and genuinely curious, sex becomes a living conversation rather than a performance. Let go of the goal of orgasm or doing it “right.” Sex is about way more than orgasm — it’s about connection, creativity, and exploration. Sometimes it’ll be magical, sometimes awkward — both are real. The aliveness is in the authenticity.

Communication is everything

Ask, listen, talk before, during, and after. Everyone’s body and boundaries are different, and you’ll never know what turns someone on if you don’t ask. Conversation is what builds trust, safety, and deeper pleasure.

Safety, shame, and relaxation

We all carry some sexual shame. The work is to unwind it — in yourself and with your partner. Create a space where everything human is welcome: sweat, tears, farts, laughter, weird sounds, awkward moments. Compliment your partner, tell them how much you want them, and only say what’s true. Real sex is human, imperfect, and beautiful. Safety and acceptance are what allow pleasure to deepen.

(Create a space where everything human is welcome.)

Consent is deeply sexy

When both people can trust their own and each other’s yes’s, no’s, and maybe’s, everything opens up.

As Emily Nagoski says:

to have better orgasms, turn off the offs and slow down how you turn on the ons.

Create the sexiest context you can create. Do the dishes, the laundry, clean the sheets, schedule your sex nights, look in the mirror every day for a month and tell your bits they’re beautiful… tell yourself you’re beautiful… notice what you like.

Curiosity over comparison

Every person, body, and desire is unique. Porn is fiction — real intimacy is discovery. Stay curious instead of following someone’s else’s script.

Techniques are just tools

Techniques are valuable — they help you learn your body, expand your range, and become more skillful. But no one goes to a concert to hear a musician practice scales. Set aside time for learning and exploration… and then forget the rules. Let go and just play. That’s where real artistry begins.

Emotional & spiritual connection matter

Sex mirrors life. The more you process stress, emotions, and old wounds, the more present and open you become. Presence in bed grows from presence in life.

Aftercare counts

How you hold each other after sex is part of the sex itself. Tenderness, words, touch, or simple closeness help integrate the experience and build trust.

You’re normal

If something doesn’t work, if arousal takes time, if your body or desire doesn’t match what you’ve seen or heard — that’s okay. Nothing’s wrong with you. You’re human and you’re normal and you belong.

And finally…

Pleasure is the measure

No one says it better than Emily Nagoski, so here goes:

“If I could have people remember only one thing it would be: pleasure is the measure. It is not how often you have sex or who you have it with, or where you do it, or in what positions or even how many orgasms you have… it’s just whether or not you like the sex you are having. And if everybody involved is glad to be there, free to leave with no unwanted consequences and likes the sex they are having… you’re already doing it right… and all the other pieces, all the other things you could be worried about like desire and orgasm… those things will fall into place when you put pleasure at the center of your definition of sexual wellbeing.”
